Tisha b'Av - The ninth day of Av

Sunday eve, August 8 - Monday, August 9, 2011

Francisco Hayez, Destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem

Tisha B'Av is often called the saddest day in Jewish history, because the following events all occurred on this very day.

  • The negative report about Canaan given to the Israelites by Moses' twelve scouts, and other events
  • The destruction of the First and Second Temples
  • The failure of Bar Kochba's revolt
  • The expulsion of the Jews from Spain

What customs are observed on Tisha b'Av?

Like Yom Kippur, Tisha b'Av is a fast day lasting from sunset the previous evening until the following nightfall. There are prohibitions on eating, drinking, bathing, perfume, wearing leather, sexual relations, and displays of affection. As with observance of other fasts, these prohibitions are suspended in favor of health issues.

How do we observe Tisha b'Av at B'nai Emunah?

We gather at 7 PM for a study session led by Rabbi Mark with light refreshments. At around 8 PM we transition into a special Tisha b'Av service in which we will all gather at the bimah and read the book of Eichah (Lamentations) together. Please come join us!
