9:30 Women of the Wall

Israeli Women Fighting for Religious Freedom

Come Learn about the Women of the Wall

Sunday, September 26, 2010 at 9:30 AM

Surprisingly, in 2010 it is against the law in Israel for women to read from the Torah out loud and wear a Tallis at the Kotel! Throughout the world, women and men do hold the Torah.... read.... study.... Yet in Israel, women can be arrested, women can be prosecuted, for those sacred acts. Women and men everywhere are joining together in support of the premise that there's more than one way to be a Jew.

On Sunday, September 26th at 9:30 am, women and men of all ages are invited to come to B'nai Emunah. Sara Yakira Heckelman is joining us. She is a member of Friends of Women of the Wall - Bay Area, which helps raise awareness and promote the efforts of Women of the Wall at the Kotel. Sara's parents, Rabbi Joe & Tzipi Heckelman, founded the Masorti Kehilat Shalva in Tsfat in 1976.

Women of the Wall is gathering 10,000 photographs of women holding a Torah, to be sent to Israeli government officials by Simchat Torah. B'nai Emunah has the unique opportunity to join this campaign in support of religious pluralism in Israel!

We will enjoy breakfast in our Sukkah, speak with Sara, and afterwards Sharon Bleviss will photograph each of us holding a Torah. If you plan to come for breakfast, please let us know you are coming, by contacting the office, 415.664.7373. A $5.00 donation for breakfast is requested.

If you can't join us on that day, please contact the office and we will find another time to accommodate you.
